Often lakes can fall victim to run-off from the surrounding areas which can massively affect the water chemistry, for example, agricultural run-off that contains fertilisers loaded with phosphorous and nutrients. Unfortunately, the same nutrients that encourage crop growth also encourage the growth of algae once they end up in the lakes ecosystem and as a result it is important to manage the level of nutrients to prevent the algae from taking over. This is where oxygen levels come into play. Aerobic bacteria digest nutrients, turning them into only water, carbon dioxide, and polysaccharides. However, they do require oxygen to complete this process.

Low levels of oxygen in the water leaves only the anaerobic bacteria to digest the nutrients. This process releases harmful methane, hydrogen sulphide and ammonia into the lake, causing a foul odour and a poor environment for wildlife. Anaerobic bacteria are also incredibly inefficient at digesting nutrients, taking up to 6 times longer than aerobic bacteria. This is why aeration is so important in maintaining a healthy lake.

Designed to hold its shape in windy conditions, the Constellation aerating fountain uses a specially designed nozzle to create a two tiered pattern. The lower tier has a very wide spray and as a result is not affected severely by the wind, while the upper tier creates a more decorative spray pattern for aesthetic purposes.
